You can’t come to Ubud and not get into the yoga scene. This travel journo tried to avoid it, so the spirit of yoga came in search of me. That beautiful spirit came in the form of talented artist and insanely amazing yogi from New Zealand. Hannah Jensen turned up at this awesome AirBnB villa one morning, and before I could say Ooohmmmm… I was balancing on one foot covered in a layer of sweat with a big smile on my face.
But you don’t want my amateur analysis of Ubud’s groovy yoga scene. Here’s the lowdown from Kiwi yogini, Hannah Jensen. We met in Ubud and idealised a road trip around Bali. Perhaps in a years time after her next show, perhaps as a celebratory trip when I finish my first book (one day soon-ish). 48 hours later, we were in a car heading north towards Lovina, where we swam with dolphins and hired a jeep. Today, we’re having breakfast on a panoramic deck perched high on the side of a headland between the mountains and the sea, somewhere between Amed and Jemeluk, catching up on the interview we’ve been skirting around amidst our adventures in Bali.
The yoga class will you miss the most… Vinyasa Flow with Bex (Yoga Barn). She’s a giggling, good-humored teacher who really connects you with the spirit of yoga.
The most challenging class… Power Vinyasa with Denise (Yoga Barn). I really enjoyed being in her class, and any class where no matter what level you are, you have the opportunity to go as far as you can – and be encouraged to go beyond your limits.
A yoga teacher or class you would recommend for first-time yogis… Emily’s Anusara at Yoga Barn, she has a beautiful soft energy that’s not intimidating.
Ubud’s yoga scene is… a melting pot of variety.
Yoga Barn or Radiantly Alive? Yoga Barn is an immersive world of yoga where you have the café, accommodation, yoga shalas, a spa, meditation pavilions and a sociable yoga community. Radiantly Alive sets the stage for good yoga, it’s another top quality yoga studio where you can get an array of great classes.
Shoutouts to Ubud’s amazing yogis… Les (Yoga Barn) who has been here for 15 years living with his partner, and he’s an amazing character. Bex (Yoga Barn) for sharing her passion for yoga, she cares so much about the world. And Tina (Yoga Barn) whose calmness and healing shine through her teachings of yin yoga.
Thanks Hannah! And all the best on your five month around-the-world trip.
